A few words about the name’s history might be of interest.
When the Turks had occupied the island of Andros, they wanted to conquer the so-called Upper Castle. An elderly woman, along with her pregnant daughter, pretended to be helpless and asked for help from the Greeks inside the castle. As a result, they opened the gates of their fortress, and the Turks invaded. However, the old woman, feeling guilty for her act of betrayal, jumped off the hill and turned to stone. Thus, the legend explains the existence of the peculiar rock standing in the waters of the beach, which, as the locals say, if seen from a certain angle, resembles the profile of an elderly woman wearing her characteristic headscarf.
Another version says that the old woman jumped because she was widowed three times and could no longer bear the loneliness.
