Habitats of Andros

Achla Habita

To get to the beach, you need to pass through the village of Vourkoti, turn right onto a downhill dirt road that will lead you on a scenic 8-kilometer route to Achla Beach.
Also on your way to the excellent Vori Beach, you will see a small wetland with a stream and plane trees that end at Achla Beach.

Dipotamata

The Dipotamata area is a rare ecological protected habitat and is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has also been declared an eco-museum by the EU. Dipotamata in Andros is a river of great natural beauty, about 7 kilometers long, in the southeastern part of the island.
Along its length, you will see wonderful buildings, pigeon houses, bridges, threshing floors, cobblestone paths, and 22 watermills. To pass through the area, you need to organize a hike. You will start from the gorge between the villages of Kochylou and Exo Vouni, located north of Korthi Bay, and end at Syneti Beach. Through the beautiful green valley of Dipotamata, you will walk on a cobblestone path beside the gorge with the stream.
You will see many watermills, some in good condition and others ruined. They once constituted the most important means of exploiting the power of water in the Cyclades. The Dipotamata ecosystem is home to the beautiful Panaxia butterflies. The route is downhill.

Caves of Andros

Aladino Cave

Foros Cave, located in the village of Aladino in Andros, 4 kilometers from Chora, is the 15th cave recorded in Greece by the Greek Speleological Society.
It was discovered in 1937 and fully mapped in 1982.
To get there, you start from an old bridge and cross a green cobblestone path. The cave offers impressive stalactites, stalagmites, helicites, and other formations, as well as unique life forms. The temperature is steady at 16-17°C with 75% humidity. Foros Cave is one of the most important attractions of Andros.

Trypes Cave in Zorkos

Trypes Cave is near Zorkos Beach in northern Andros and is a natural wonder that looks like two eyes gazing at the sea. It was created by centuries of sea waves and consists of small tunnels.
The entrance to the cave is narrow and steep, requiring caution, but the view from the inside is breathtaking. Near the cave is Zorkos Beach, with crystal-clear waters, sand, and fine pebbles, offering a cinematic landscape.

 

Vitali Cave

Vitali Cave is located near the beach by the riverbed. You will see wonderful and colorful stalactites.

Waterfalls in Andros

Pithara Waterfall

To find the waterfall, go to the Pithara location and take a short hiking route.
The path starts to the left of the village of Apoikia. Following the signs, you will cross a lush path along the river to the point of the waterfall formed by the springs.

Paleopolis Waterfall

Near the village of Paleopolis, before the village, there is a small settlement built on the road on the mountainside.
At the beginning of the settlement, you will see the abundant waters from a waterfall located high on Mount Petalo.
Note: During the summer months and due to drought, it dries up.

Remata Waterfall

The Remata waterfall is on the road to the village of Arni. The waterfall is located uphill along the ravine that we will encounter. The ravine is lush, and the route will reward you.

Springs in Andros

Sariza Spring

The Sariza Spring in Andros, known for its therapeutic water, is located in the village of Apoikia and is said to have been named after Pasha San Riza of Evia. It was founded in 1787 by Makarios Polemis and was used for drinking, irrigation, and washing clothes. The spring water, rich in minerals, was officially recognized in 1932 for its therapeutic properties, especially for kidney diseases. The steady amount of water from the spring is bottled in a local factory, and its reputation is often compared to French Evian water.

 

Menites Springs

The Menites Springs in Andros are located in the traditional settlement of Menites, among walnut and plane trees. The waters flow from marble lion heads in the village square, known for its taverns and cafes. The village is considered one of the most beautiful and greenest settlements in Andros, close to Chora.
The springs are located below the sanctuary of Panagia Koumoulos, possibly at the site of an ancient temple of Dionysus.

Other Springs

Other well-known springs are Lezina, Zenio in Kouvara, Koumoulos in Menites, Meliti and Metochi in Strapouries, Abyss in Livadia, and Akoe and Leivada in Lamira.
